EcoCarbonio: recycled carbon fiber becomes an innovative material.

From waste to resource, thanks to the project, which was among the winners of Lombardy Region’s “Call Hub”

(From Lombardy Region’s Open Innovation site).

From waste to resource, from discarded material heading for landfill to secondary raw material, with innovative technical properties. This is the new life being proposed for carbon fiber by the EcoCarbonio project, one of the 33 winners of the “Call Hub Research and Innovation” competition held by Lombardy Region and partially financed through POR-FESR 2014-2020 funding.

The objectives, applications and strengths of the project are illustrated in this video made by the engineer Flavio Caretto of project partner ENEA’s Laboratory of Functional Materials and Technologies for Sustainable Applications (MATAS):

Carbon fibers

Global consumption of carbon fiber has been increasing constantly over the past twenty years, and this has led to an increase in industrial waste generated through the manufacture of virgin fibers. Carbon fibers allow for decreases in weight of around 40% with respect to traditional metal materials, as well as a substantial decrease in CO2 levels. For this reason, their use is set to increase yet further.
